Hi, My name is Melissa and we just took in 2 donkey’s for one of my girlfriend’s that had to move. This is my question both the donkey’s are old. One is over 35 year’s old and the other is not far behind. I would like to put some weight on them, but I am not sure how to do it. They have all the hay they want all the time and they did at her house to. We went to our feed store here and one of the guy’s there told us that he had people that put their old horse’s on some rabbit fed. We also read on the computer that they needed to be on high protein and low sugar. Well rabbit fed has high protein and low sugar. But I hate to put them on it without talking to someone that know’s how to really take care of these old men. We have only had them for two day’s and we are already in love. I can’t even seem to stay in the house to clean I want to be out with them LOL. My girlfriend said to me be careful Missy donkey’s are like potato chip’s you just can’t have one LOL. They have only been here two day and I can see now what she mean’s. I would love any help with this.

Dear Melisa,
Please be careful with donkeys take some time to understand their digestive systems. I highly suggest not giving them rabit food. I have several articles written regarding diet for donkeys please dont feed them rabbit food. Yes donkeys are very special indeed and will touch your heart and soul if you give them a chance.
Timothy, orchard hay is low sugar
Fresh water is essential donkeys dont like dirty water

That is a great picture.. I am going to train my mammoth to drive and have started basic training. I thought they had to be 4 years old to actually ride them, but them I saw a website that were selling 3 1/2 year old mammoths as riding donkeys. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Beth,
Here is the link explaining the growth plates for equine http://www.donkeywhisperer.com/whentostartanequine.htm Mammoth donkeys are full grown at 6 years old. Light riding is important to prepare the donkey for the trail riding. Ground work is imperative for success, donkeys are very smart so it is best to have a plan before attempting to train them. I study and train under Parelli.
Try to make your training be low stress, a bareback pad with a real cinch helps emulate what a saddle will feel like. Teach your donkey all the verbal commands whoa, backup, walk, trot, canter. Lots of people don’t pay attention to the growth plates sadly of the equine.

I too have a 5 year old donkey named Eli. I rescued him 3 years ago from an auction. He is smart, lovable and full of himself. I also have 2 horses and have been told not to pasture them together due to lung worm. Is this true?? How should they be wormed? He gets along with the horses so well. I think he has a love affair with my 19 year old quarter. What can be done? He also came to me with fat pockets on his rear and a cresty neck. During the day he is on a small pasture with warm and cool season grass and a hay net with 1 large leaf of grass hay. The are all brought in for the evening and stalled for safety reasons. My vet told me to give him only one leaf of hay but I have read over and over that all equine should have free choice hay at all times. He is only on grass hay. I was also told not to give him any supplements. Please help….

Betsy,
I highly suggest having your vet recommend the type of wormer, times of year, amount and diet. Our Vet Dr. Hills has experience with many donkeys ours and Mass Ass Acres over 50 donkeys on this farm, I would ask your vet to coordinate with him to help if not experienced with donkeys. http://www.soundequinevet.com/
Lung Worm again ask your vet to explain why does your donkey have this?
All of our equine live in a dry paddock and recieve 4 small meals a day of low sugar orchard hay and we supplement our mammoth to help with his hooves. Again I would defer these questions to your DVM. I am not a DMV and cannot make any medical recommendations.
Where do you live? Please share photos of your equine would love to see them.

You’re welcome! I liked the article, and shared the link with a mule and horse owning friend.
I have a couple other donkey photos in my blog archives. Here are the links:

I was looking for a donkey pal for my lone horse, but then wound up getting a small herd of alpacas. They are in adjacent fields. My horse seems to really enjoy their company. She hangs out there near the fence a lot, gazing over at them. I’m glad she’s not alone anymore.
