Hoof Abscess

rio6jan2013

The Donkey Whisperer Farm is officially six years old in 2013time has literally flown by so much has changed and yet so much remains the same.  Rio is now a full-grown Mammoth donkey as he turns seven years old in 2013.  Rocket Man turns nineteen and my horse Lily is eight years young.

The most frustrating and difficult issues I have had with our Mammoth donkey is hoof abscesses. It appears that Mammoth donkeys should live in the desert with no rain poor boy was born in Western Washington with too much rain.  Each of them get their feet picked out daily and their paddock has very little mud and yet the Mammoth donkey suffers from abscess, networking via the internet I have learned this is sadly the health issues associated with Mammoth donkeys.

Before I brought all three equine home I researched, networked and read every book I could get my hand on to create the dryest paddock to prevent hoof problems as I have lived in Western Washington most of my life.  I placed 3/4 clean gravel down on the hill between the two barns to avoid mud, thrush and abscesses.  Rio has had horrific abscesses and we are now laying pin chips down (no cedar) to help him.  I made the decision to shoe Rio’s front (absessing yearly) with Dr. Hills overseeing the process this last fall.  Rio’s custom-made Mammoth Donkey shoes are helping him get more exercise on the gravel as he is running and playing again, he is much more comfortable.

I place 3/4 clean gravel in between the two barns where they walk back and forth day after day to stop the mud.  Additionally I suggest laying pin chips down so they have a place to lay outside and it is soft and dry the only problem I have noted with pin chips is it needs to be replaced at least every other year or it will turn to mud.

Hoof abscesses in donkeys are not the same as the horse.  Why?

Donkeys hoof anatomy is of a donkey not a horse. Donkeys are strong and will not show any pain until it is a serious medical matter.  Here is another post I wrote explaining the emergency kit and the hoof abscess.  The horse would be limping much faster than the donkey or mule with an abscess thus the seriousness and need for a vet immediately. Please call the vet for draining a hoof abscess do not leave this to the farrier.

What can you do for your donkey, horse or mule suffering from a hoof abscess?

Call the Vet hopefully you have a vet that has experience with donkeys.   Donkeys are not horses and thus their hooves do not behave the same as a horse.  Please only authorize your vet to find the abscess and drain it,never let the farrier do the vet’s job!  Your vet will cut out a very small hole for drainage releasing the pain and pressure almost instantly.  Never authorize the farrier to do this as this is a medical need not a farrier need.

Follow up maintenance is necessary the hole needs to be kept clean, pick the stuff out of feet every day, I suggest getting a spray bottle and using Beda dine solution with some water in a water bottle to spray the hole clean every day.  We use the solo spray bottle as it gets all the gunk out and keeps it clean, Soaking a cotton ball in beda dine solution and sticking it in the hole is necessary until the hole has grown out.   The hoof will not grow completely out for at least ten months to a year so keeping the hole clean from mud and gunk is a full-time job to say the least.

One of the best things we can do as an owner of donkeys, horses and mules is keep the hooves trimmed and make sure they are being trimmed correctly.  Select Pete Ramey to learn how to trim a donkey, trimming needs to be done at least every 6-7 weeks.  I highly recommend you the owner viewing this dvd and asking your farrier to review it.  Trimming equine is not a back yard hobby and it needs to be left to professionals in my opinion as incorrect trimming will cause abscesses and sand and grit to travel into the white line.  As the owner we must be picking the hoof out each and every day and making sure no thrush is growing in the hoof.  Diet of the equine is imperative to optimum health so test your hay, do not give grain and treats to the donkey just clean water and low sugar hay.  Orchard hay around the Pacific northwest is what we use and a slow feeder is also a good idea as long as it is covered to keep the rain out.

I am trying a new slow feeder out will follow-up with the results in my upcoming blogs.

Video of a Donkey Suffering With A Hoof Abscess

Summary:

Diet, exercise, professional trimmer of hooves every 6-7 weeks, clean out hooves each and every day, clean dry padock, morton loose salt, white salt block, clean water, low sugar hay and no grazing in green grass for the easy keeper. Donkeys are always easy keepers. :)

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Please Sign The Petition To Stop Donkey Roping – Get Them To Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, TX

Donkey roping is an extremely cruel “sport” where the donkey is shocked with a cattle prod until he tries to run away. Once in motion two people on horseback run the donkey down, one throwing a rope around its neck, the other around its rear legs. Once roped the donkey is then stretched between the two horses. Broken bones and death are all too common during these events.

I responded to Ms. Morales with the link to the promo poster https://donkeyrescue.donordrive.com/assets/donkeyrescue/images/$cms$/100/1459.jpg CLEARLY indicating that this event was PROUDLY PRESENTED BY THE VAN HORN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND CITY OF VAN HORN TX. CONTINUED ON ANOTHER UPDATE

I want to recommend that Jason Owen be politely encouraged to relinquish the 45+- donkeys to PVDR.

CANCELLED?! Continued from below update

from continued………….I also pointed out that there are photos and video (now password blocked) on http://www.justhorsinaroundphotography.com/p676930534/e17b0fa5e#h17b0fa5e clearing showing
donkeys being roped in Van Horn last July 2011.

I view this as a victory, partially. We need to get these donkeys to Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, we need a confirmation and promise from Jason Owen that he will not participate in any other donkey roping event EVER, meaning by purchasing donkeys for or promoting donkeys in a roping event.

Next we need this to stop all over Texas, and any other states that allows it. We need to pressure the law enforcement of Texas to actually enforce statue 42.09 http://donkeyrescue.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cms.page&id=1122

ALL OF YOU ARE TO BE THANKED AND HUGGED, AND NUZZLED BY A DONKEY, FOR HELPING THESE DONKEYS. My most sincerest thanks and regards, Diana Reese

A Little Surprise Awaits The Blogger

Howdy,

As I walked into the barn this morning two little birdies were busy building a mud nest above Rio and Rocket Man’s barn they have been working for a couple of weeks now, working as a team helping to create a nest for their new babies.   Soon I will get to enjoy watching the babies put their little beaks up for food and the bonus they eat the mosquitos and fly’s.

Got a fly problem? We pick up the poop twice a day and compost.  Additionally we use fly predators as they work.

This morning as I was placing the fresh hay, clean water I did my normal routine picked up poop out of their barns, gave the donkeys their morning rubs and loving along with kisses.  Little Rocket Man will kind of nudge me if I forget to rub him and give him kisses his loving time is very important for him and me.  Next I move to their hooves, pick out all the junk as it’s raining again in Washington.  Both our donkey boys act like they are in a yoga class stretching their back legs out before I pick out the gunk.  Donkeys are so much different from the horse they are special indeed.

Next I get to rub my horse for a few seconds she really does not enjoy being rubbed when it’s meal time as she is all about eating, that AAA personality it’s ok, I have the same personality, I get it.  I pick out her feet with nothing on her she gently picks up each foot as she understands the drill after five years together.  Our relationship has changed as I can’t ride any more,  I think she misses going for trail rides with me and a trail buddy and the trail horse.   I do take her for walks for a hand graze and we work a little on manners if need be, not too much now as she is not a filly any more she is a full-grown horse, the lead mare of her herd of donkeys, smile.

When I come down to the barn I always receive her nicker it is a sweet sound and I love it.  The donkeys are always calm and patient with me unless the coyotes are out they just feel like a black lab comfortable and mellow.  I truly believe the donkey is for the disabled or over forty human looking to experience riding, farm life and not have to be a super smart human to manage them.

The little surprise is the gift of life GOD has given me each and every day, my best friend and husband, all the animals on the farm and our oasis garden full of birds, squirrels and butterflies.  Yes the butterflies have returned and I am thrilled, what a wonderful surprise to see the butterflies return to my garden.

Do you love surprises?  Blogging provides the opportunity for many surprises as complete strangers send me the most wonderful notes of caring, prayers and deep emotional connections, it is a wonderful thing to be part of the blogging world.  A little surprise awaits the blogger!

Thank you for reading my blog it is indeed a wonderful thing to make friends all over the world.

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Cracked Pots

Howdy,

Reading blogs this morning I found this post named Go ahead  select to view and turn up your volume.  “Thinking about how the human body is like a cracked pot to GOD after we have been here on earth a while.”  Trauma (loss, pain, suffering, death, drugs, alcohol, divorce, cancer, car accidents, and family division) can change our beautiful bodies into cracked pots.

Guess what?  GOD can use a cracked pot to help others as we can all relate to real life issues more than book smart stuff. GOD is amazing!

God in Jesus Christ precious name uses the cracked pots (hurting people who have given their life to Jesus) to spread light to all of his children.  Some of us have physical scars from the trauma we have endured but most just have deep emotional scars from the suffering and loss of this most difficult world we live in. We indeed live in a fallen world but with Jesus life is peaceful and rewarding.

I say let your light shine through your cracked pot and be a human angel to another living person or animal.  Age has taught me I am not smart enough to handle all of the problems in this world, I submit, I give everything to Jesus.

Select The bible  to receive a free bible app for your computer or smart phone.  The bible is still my favorite book as GOD is amazing!

All that I am and all that I will become before I leave this human body I give to GOD as Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.  Please remember how fragile each and every day is; live life humble and grateful for every person and animal that is in our life, as each day is indeed a gift from GOD. God is amazing!

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Faith Is Something We Cannot See, Feel Or Touch

Howdy,

I found this blog and had to share it select A facebook find!

This really got me to thinking this morning when things are really tough in life and I just can’t see the light beyond the darkness I rely on faith from GOD to help me.  Faith is all I had to believe I would not die but live after surviving a life threatening car accident. Faith is what I hang onto when the pain is insane and I can’t take another minute of it, Faith is what I cling to when I cannot understand in my mind how things will work out. Faith is peace for me.

”Faith for me is believing (knowing with no doubts) I am GODs child and GOD can restore everything, GOD in Jesus Christ precious name will give me the super natural strength to move forward when my body and mind is broken and crushed.”  GOD is amazing, we must use faith when we cannot see what tomorrow will bring.

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!
