Check out a poitou donkey breeder in Washington State
STERLING (CBS) – A farm in Sterling is celebrating the birth of a rare breed of donkey.
According to Davis Farmland, the male Poitou that was born on Saturday is one of only 100 purebred Poitous in the world.
Poitous are named after a region in France where they were found. It’s believed they were introduced there by the Roman Empire.
However, most of them were eventually cross-bred with other donkey breeds.
Poitous, as described by the farm, are “tall animals with Rastafarian-like hair, llama-like legs, big ears and a small rat-like tail.”
The family of Poitous are far from the only endangered species at Davis Farmland. The farm says it is the largest sanctuary of endangered livestock in North America.
