2017 is our year! This has been a long process of praying, planning and waiting for the exact right time.

Things To Consider Before You Start To Build

Marrigage – Did you plan your dreams with your partner? If not things could get rocky. Marriage is a give and take each must learn to let go. Read How to stay married while building.

Land – Will you purchase the land or use your builders land? If you use the builders land the builder may or may not want you to use their builder and cookie cutter plans. These plans will not be your custom plans.  Do your homework, easements, wetlands, etc., are important before purchasing land with nothing on it.

Working with an architect is not always easy. Just like everything in life you must do some work if your goal is excellence. Interview and research to find the right architect who is willing listen to you, build your home not their creative project.  This is your money. Try to find an architect that actually has experienced building project from beginning to end. Some never get out of the office.

Learning to read the house drawings. Ask you architect before you start paying and working with him/her to teach you how to read the drawings. This seems to get lost in the middle of the storm of creating the house.

Change orders is a NO, NO. Do not do re-work, make sure all of your house is in 3D to walk around inside your home before signing off on the house. This will save you tears and money. When you have a great builder everything is wonderful. Let the experts take care of your home the first time correctly. The cost to do re-work is too expensive both financially and emotionally.

Live on your land for at least one to two years. Why? Neighbors, noise, weather helps determine where you want to place your home. We lived on our land for two years before construction started, this has been an invaluable experience in determining where to place the home on our farm.

Do your homework before purchasing your land, easements, wetlands, etc., are important before purchasing land with nothing on it.

The most important person to hire is your builder. Meet people who have used the builder, ask to walk in and see their work.  A good builder will have references. Interview at least three builders in your area.

Finally it’s time to build. Make sure your builders contract reflects you do not want garbage left on your property, loud music blasting, cigarets, food thrown about. Write this on the contract. Install video surveillance! Be sure to keep outstanding records and an outstanding budget. Did you know you will pay tax for building your home? Yes!

Did you know building a home is stressful? Yes! Dreams and reality sometimes do not match depending on your pocket-book. The computer is your friend for design ideas and it’s free. Use this tool save yourself money with a fancy designer. Be sure to send photos to your builder.

Sit back and enjoy watching your home be built.

Courage Is A Gift From God

couragelionbible3ea5485e12fbbcfd32756c91a05cadc2

With God’s protection and guidance we should be able to conquer fears and live a life full of courage. It is God in Jesus Christ name that commands us to have courage, for having courage means having faith and confidence in Him. Through scripture we can find the courage God desires us to have.

  • 1 Chronicles 28:20

20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.

Every day we wake up is a blessing. Each of us have the same amount of time to spend here on earth. Change your heart and mind and things will be easier. Attitude is not an easy thing to change depending on our history and past experiences, some people will look for a way to change. While others are happy to settle. The bible commands us to never settle. We were created to move our minds, bodies and spirits. We are commanded to help one another and care about our world. Sadly greed has destroyed way too much of society.

I have learned via suffering life’s trials a simple fact. I determine if I smile, I determine if I frown. Sadly pain and sickness can destroy our life. I give my life to Jesus Christ to do with what he wants. Without GOD I would not be alive and I certainly would not be writing in this blog. GOD has a purpose for each person he created. I am a survivor of a life threatening motor vehicle accident leaving me with a life long physical disability and pain. I made the decision to do everything I could do to adapt to my disability and not let it take away the very essence of myself. I enjoy life, people art, animals and teaching. Everyone has trials, everyone has difficulties. Learn to forgive quickly and enjoy your life. GOD has a plan for you. Never give up!

melodyrioaug2016age10

Pain should never be used as a weapon against humans or animals. If you see abuse report it! Sometimes the only person who can help another animal or humans pain is a stranger.

Nothing in life is easy, each day is a gift from GOD. We must each pay it forward! Say thank you even when you pay for something. Do not take people for granted. People who help you live your life are gifts from GOD.

So You Want To Be A Farmer

December 21st, 2016 is the shortest day of the year.

img_8146img_7999img_7987img_8101The Donkey Whisperer Farm is a blessing. We will thank GOD for this farm forever as our farm is GOD’s blessing.

GOD bless the farmer and his/her way of life!

Farmers work hard! No vacation time, no sick days, no time off.

Now for the good part!

  1. Every seed we plant will grow food. Food for animals to consume and eventually humans too.
  2. The land will reward us when we take the time to give back.
  3. Never expect anything less than what you put back into your soil as composting is gold for farmers.
  4. The farmer has a big office
  5. Farmers prepare for spring in the winter
  6. The farmer must be a planner and very careful with their budget
  7. Farmers get dirty every single day
  8. Farmers breathe fresh air every single day, rain, snow, wind or hot
  9. Farmers love to share as getting be a farmer is a blessing
  10. Farmers work hard and they are planners.
  11. GOD is in control. It is what it is when the bad year comes and when the good year comes. Farmers pray to God each and every day.

What to Consider?

  • Vision and Values: A farm is both an extension of the vision and values of the individual(s) who start(s) it, and it has to be carefully planned to make sure that it fits within that vision as well as within the particular confines of the place where it is established.
  • Place Matters: Direct market farms typically aren’t well suited for the rural heartland, and rice farming is not going to be successful on the arid plains of Eastern Washington. These are extreme examples, but there are important subtleties to every market and every plot of land.
  • Planning: New farms need to have a well designed business plan that takes into consideration individual infrastructure and financial needsthe viability of marketing strategies, and the farmer’s production capacity and knowledge.
  • Education and Experience: Preparation, knowledge, and training are essential. But so is being able adapt quickly to the unexpected, to persevere when factors beyond one’s control conspire against you, and knowing how/when/what/where to expend time, energy, and resources.
  • Managing risk: It is helpful to plan careful to manage risk through diversification, financial management, and the ability to withstand a couple of bad years.
  • Start small: For most beginning farmers, we advise starting small to allow time for details to be worked out, for additional learning to occur, and to mitigate the size and scope of problems that will inevitably arise.
  • Wait for the funding to come before you grow your farm!
