Does My Donkey, Horse or Mule Need A Grazing Muzzle?

RIOLILYPONYUPBefore the semi-truck accident in 2010 I was riding and preparing Rio for riding as he was a bit too young to ride.  We took all three in the horse trailer and went for trail walks (my husband walking the two donkeys with the surcingle attaching them together for safety) preparing them for trail riding and keeping  them physically active.  After the semi-truck accident they just stood around eating and putting on weight. Just like people can put on weight fast when not staying active so can animals.

Video showing my husband practicing around the farm before we went to the trail – Remember to always practice at home before going out into the woods for safety.

Wild horses, donkeys and mules walk at least fifteen to twenty miles a day along with a bit of running when a predator comes.  Domesticated equine today stand around eating and are prone to laminits, founder, colic, hoof abscesses, and eventually death.  “All of these things can be avoided if we understand that the equine is built to eat a little bit of grass and walk, eat a little and walk, run, sweat and move their feet.  Donkeys are always easy keepers and cannot stand out in lush brush, green grass, oats and grain while being a couch potato standing around the farm.”

“If you get educated about the diet, learn how to keep your equine healthy you will save vet bills, money, tears, stress and most of all the life of your beloved equine.” Melody Johnson, Donkey Whisperer Farm

Here at the Donkey Whisperer Farm I limit the amount of time our equine get to go out to eat green brush, green grass to half an hour.  I know this sounds harsh but it keeps them healthy and happy they have orchard hay tested at 7% sugar in their slow feeders, clean water and loose salt and salt blocks.  If we ever move to a farm with pasture they will be wearing grazing muzzles. 🙂

Each of us need to make our own decisions as what is best for our beloved Donkey, horse or mule and we must never forget the animal did not choose us we chose them. We are the smart human and it is our job to get educated and provide them with the best life possible.

Twenty Six Starving Horses Were Sezied

Howdy,

Please do your best to share information to help these horses by supporting in any way you can this includes forwarding on the internet.  Here is the news article select News.

People Helping Horses

Dear Scott & Melody ,

I am in need of help, immediately!

When you hear the news, you will understand why.

Earlier this month, at the request of Animal Control, People Helping Horses assisted in the seizure of 26 starving horses

Late on a Monday night Officer Diaz called me. She didn’t waste any time before asking,

“How much room do you have in your barn?” Her next sentence made my heart stop: “I need to seize 26 horses, TOMORROW.”

As the implications of what she was asking sunk in, my whole body shook with emotion.  In my mind I knew there was absolutely no way I could meet the needs of 26 new animals.

Fancy's Portrait
Meet Fancy

Yet, I knew that People Helping Horses is the only rescue in our area that can even come close to accommodating such numbers. The only other alternative for the 26, already hurting and abused horses, would be the auction yard; in other words, death

I couldn’t let that happen. For me there was no choice, I had to help!

Then I remembered that it wouldn’t be just me helping. It would be YOU as well.

You have proven yourself to value the life of each and every horse, and I knew that if I agreed to take on this challenge, YOU would partner with me and help in any way you were able.

So, although I knew that on paper there was no way to come up with the finances it requires to undertake such a large group of sick and starving horses, I said yes.

Fancy on Arrival

I didn’t sleep that night.  What was I thinking?  Twenty-six new horses!  How in the world were we going to financially support that many new horses in the barn?

We are already down $120,000 in donations, just in the first four months of the year.

To meet the needs of 26 new horses is going to cost us an additional $15,000 PER MONTH!

As you can see, when I first said I need your help IMMEDIATELY, I was not exagerating.  I will be honest; I don’t just need your help.  I need a miracle.

Can YOU find it in your heart to give $500, $100, or at least $25?

Since that phone call, the horses have moved into our stables.  It took two full days to move them.  Now it has been nearly two weeks of veterinary visits, assessing, feeding and one emotional two day stretch to save a horse that in the end, could not be saved.

Lifting Fancy
Lifting Fancy

Yes, you did understand that correctly.  We have lost one of the original 26 who were seized.  The horses we collected came in such bad shape that even the efforts of five people and two days could not repair the damage that had been done.

As much as my heart broke after that loss, I had to look and realize that there are still 25 animals that CAN be saved.  They have made it through the hardest part and anow they need us to do our part.

Now is the time for YOU to step in and…

Change the Life of a Horse… FOREVER!

Please Scott & Melody, be the miracle that these horses need and send your most generous gift, TODAY.

Every horse we collected was obviously starving, their hipbones clearly visible. Each was infested with lice, covered in rain rot and mud fever in addition to being hypothermic. The cost of adding so many horses to our barn, each with so many needs, is staggering.Hay prices have risen to $345/ton. With a healthy horse eating half a ton per month, we are looking at almost $5000/monthin hay alone. My best guess is that it will take 6-9 months for these horses to recover which means $30,000 to $45,000just to feed these horses through their recovery.Veterinary costs will be another $8,000.Farrier fees will be close to $4,000.These numbers already take into consideration the drastic donations and cost-savings that are being offered by the veterinarian and ferrier.Scott & Melody, it is going to take an estimated $50,000to rehabilitate these horses.FIFTY Thousand Dollars.

I don’t have that money.

That $50,000 is still only for the rehabilitation. To train and prepare these animals for new forever homes will take even longer. It could be an additional 6-9 months before these beautiful horses are ready to be adopted.

These numbers are overwhelming. The resources required to change the lives of these horses seems impossible to me.

However, I KNOW that YOU care about these amazing animals as much as I do. Please don’t delay in showing your support.

The need is great.

Please, send as much as you are able. Without YOU these horses will not survive. WITH you each of these horses has the opportunity to move from near death, to vibrant life.

Please, send us your most generous gift… today.

Blessings,

Did You Know Donkeys

Howdy,

Did you know donkeys love to dance?  Yes indeed they dance and it is a wonderful thing to witness as donkeys love to play, wrestle, grab the neck of another donkey, play tug-o-war with toys and much, much more.

Donkeys can die from depression? Yes, when their pasture buddy dies they grieve just like us humans and can stop eating and drinking.

Donkeys should never be fed alfalfa hay?

Donkeys need a vet, hoof care, wormer and shots just like a horse?

Donkeys prefer warm water when it’s cold outside – Ensure they can not bite the cord and get electrocuted.

Donkeys get bored easily as they are really smart they prefer a job to do.

Donkeys love to eat old stumps and wood?

Donkeys can jump without running?

Donkeys that are happy don’t bray all the time?  Our donkeys hardly ever bray

Do you have any donkey stories to share, leave a comment?

GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!
